Background

This was a student project during my studies at the UX Design Institute. The challenger brand was looking to make waves in the financial world. They needed to create a visual design for a new banking application.

The design should reflect a playful, clear, and trustworthy personality and work responsively across desktop, tablet and mobile layouts. I was also asked to select the bank’s name.

Inspiration and mood boards

First, I gathered competitor research references to create mood boards by selecting products with playful elements, ample white space, and legible typography.

I ensured that these products engendered trustworthiness through the use of appropriate colors, illustrations, fonts, and photography.

Color, shapes and typography

I chose blue as the primary color for this project to evoke feelings of safety, trust, and tranquility. To achieve a sense of stability, security, and trustworthiness, I incorporated square and rectangular shapes with round corners.

I included circular shapes in the graphics to give viewers more time to appreciate the design. The font choices of Montserrat for headers and subtitles and Source Sans Pro for the remainder of the text create a strong, modern, and clean feel for the design.

Finally, I selected a minimalist dashboard layout to make banking information easy to understand and to reduce strain on the viewer.

Final designs

I designed responsive designs for the "My Accounts", "My Spending", and "Transaction History" pages of Free Money Bank following multiple iterations.

Outcomes

Creating a responsive and intuitive application was an extremely rewarding project. I enjoyed exploring how color systems interact with each other to produce a desired result, and applying concepts like visual hierarchy, balance, and order to create a design that clearly communicates its purpose. Having a better understanding of how these principles work together gave me the confidence to position each element accurately and compose a design that is both attractive and effective.
